Born a slave, he illegally educated himself, ran off and joined the Army. He obtained a Teachers Certificate, became the Army's first Black Chaplain and was stationed at Angel Island in San Francisco bay. At the time of his retirement from the Army, he was the highest ranking Black Officer. Allensworth fulfilled his dream of founding an all black town which now has California State Historic Park status. This book is a tribute to his dreams and works and a portion of the sale of each book goes to support the "Friends of Allensworth", a non-profit group providing docent and other services to Allensworth State Historic Park near Fresno, California. |
